At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
