A person who contaminated candy with tranquilliser and distributed them to youngsters at a summer camp in Leicestershire has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children who were between nine and ten.

The accused was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

However, he disputed one particular crime he was charged with, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She stated his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he ran.

The man engaged in a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior said, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to eat sweets "rapidly".

She told the court the defendant had engaged in this activity with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She stated Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had suspicions in recently.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his stepson had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.

"They chose" to have a look in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC explained materials including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She said the man went on to play the "sweet game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the family member notified the law enforcement again.

She stated Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a room of five children.
