Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
