UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings concerning Chelsea's the Portuguese international following an incident where he shoved a young stadium attendant during the Champions League defeat by Paris St‑Germain.

The Portugal international, Pedro Neto, pushed the boy during added time of Wednesday's last-16 fixture in Paris – where Chelsea lost heavy defeat – which caused the boy to fall off a stool.

The incident triggered a heated exchange between players from both teams.

Uefa said proceedings have been instigated against the player for "conduct contrary to sporting spirit" as per UEFA's code.

"Uefa's disciplinary bodies will make a ruling on this case at a later date," UEFA announced.

Neto said sorry after the match and blamed getting swept up "by the heat of the moment" while he was attempting to regain possession of the match ball.

"This is out of character for me. It was in the heat of the moment and I offer my apologies. My shirt was given to him. I'm really sorry about it - an apology is necessary," Neto told broadcasters.

"I have limited French, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha intervened and told him I was not like this.

"At the end he saw the funny side and I presented him with my jersey apologising about 35 times. He realized the context of the incident and was content with the situation."

Chelsea welcome PSG in the upcoming second leg in the second leg, after Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.
