Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
